PURPOSES OF THE ACCESSIBILITY COMMITTEE
- To remove physical and social bariers which impede the full participation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of social life.
- To create a space where those who experience impediments to participating in our community can come and be heard.
- To minimize barriers in new developments.
FUNCTIONS OF THE ACCESSIBILITY COMMITTEE
- To inform persons with disabilities of the existance and mission of this committee and to work with them to identify social and physical barriers.
- To work to increase public awareness of the needs and abilities of people with disabilities.
- To provide advice on matters on which local governments or other bodies are making decisions and which decisions will affect persons with disabilities.
- To work with municipal governments and other agencies to better the lot of Comox Valley disabled persons including applying for funding where appropriate.
- To promote the concept of a barrier-free society through educational programmes.
- To provide a place where persons with disabilities can voice their concerns to decision-making and policy-advisory bodies involved in housing, transportation, employment, culture, recreation and public involvement/education services.
